Is it who you know (social capital)
or what you know (human capital) that leads to success? While what you know depends on who
you know, social networking can rapidly bridge the gap between what you know you don't
know and new knowledge (what you will know). This
Toolkit is a collection of selected resources on social network theory and includes a
Personal KNETMAPTM tool for interactive experiential learning. There are
enormous benefits to applying social networking principles for business situations in
almost any type of organization, of any size.
Valdis E. Krebs is an organizational
network consultant. He holds
an undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Computer Science and a graduate
degree in Human Resources. Since 1988 he has applied organizational network
analysis to improve knowledge work within and between Fortune 500 firms such
as IBM, Lucent, TRW, and supported consulting firms such as Ernst & Young,
Pricewaterhouse Coopers, and Booz-Allen-Hamilton. In addition to knowledge
networks, he has applied these methodologies to mapping, measuring and molding strategic
alliances, communities of interest, emergent structures on the WWW, and internet works.
His work has been referenced in many publications, including the Wall Street Journal,
Entrepreneur, Training, PC Magazine, ZDNet, Corporate Leadership Council's Best Practices
Reports, Knowledge Management, Across the Board, Business Week, HR Executive, Personal
Journal, FORTUNE, and Esther Dyson's influential information technology newsletter,
Release 1.0. He writes a regular column, "Working in the Connected World," for
the IHRIM Journal.
Valdis is a joint collaborator with KNOW Inc. in the
development of KNETMAP, a Web-based online tool for the visual representation of an
organization's knowledge network. User deployed, with "Yellow Pages" (which
contain knowledge artifacts, which are in turn part of an "artifact network")
hyper-linked to each node, KNETMAP is a powerful knowledge management tool. It can
be used the query an organization, "map it" in terms of its various
information flows, and make use of various metrics to monitor its knowledge sharing
capacity. The Krebs Toolkit is a companion e-learning component to the installation of
KNETMAP on a corporate
intranet. |
The Community of Practice Toolkit will help you build a successful community of practice that is integrally linked to your company's strategic vision.
This toolkit also includes an interactive Customer Dialer - the most telling
indicator for assessing an organization's understanding of its business.
Based on the recent release, Leveraging Communities of Practice for Strategic Advantage by Hubert
Saint-Onge and Deb Wallace.
